Chapter 11
Gone Antiquing
Let me tell you, what I wasnât expecting when I walked down the stairs the next day, was a makeshift intervention.
Geena, Ruby, Marguerite and even Lucifer were all haphazardly arranged around the sitting room as if they were waiting for something. Me, I supposed.
âUm. Good morning?â
âBirdie! Good, Iâm glad youâre up. We have some plans. Weâre getting some fresh air. Real fresh airâfarther out than just a couple dozen yards away in the backyard, I mean,â Geena announced, pushing her sunglasses down over her eyes.
âSorry, what? What do you mean you have plans?â
Ruby sat up with hopeful smile. âMama thought it would be a good idea for you to get out of the house for a little while.â
My gaze immediately dropped to Corinneâs sleeping form. Geena had changed her clothes this morning it seemed and judging by the full bag of saline hanging above Corinneâs head, she also just did an overall checkup on her.
It didnât matter that I knew Corinne wasnât going anywhere⦠the idea of leaving the house completely sent a wave of quiet panic over me. âI donât think I need to go anywhere. Iâm fine, really.â
Everyone around me seemed to expect me to say this.
âYouâre going stir-crazy. And not only that, but our friends miss you. They want to personally check on you and make sure youâre okay. You know themâthey wonât just take my word for it,â Geena said.
âWhat about Corinne? I thought you were the one who refused to leave her side as a medical professional?â I replied, taking a stab in the dark and hoping to hang on Geenaâs overall medical responsibility.
She pursed her lips. âWhile thatâs true, we have not seen any change in a week, Birdie.â
That hit me right in the gut, although I wasnât sure whether it was because Corinne hadnât shown any signs of improvement or whether it was because I had no idea what day it was or that it had already been a weekâ¦
It was Margueriteâs turn to speak up. âI will stay in here with her while you and Geena go out. I will of course let you know if anything changes, but I donât expect it to.â
I whipped my head around to Ruby. âAre you going too?â
âNope. Iâm going home to spend some time with Shawn and the kids. Before they had the chat with you, everyone ganged up on me, so itâs not just you,â she said, still smiling. âWe both need some time to chill out, I think. You especially.â
âAnd not that you asked, but I will be off to speak with an acquaintance of mine in. They told me about a ritual that might be of use to me. And theyâre the only one around who has what weâll need,â Lucifer piped up, pulling himself away from the doorway.
There was a pause through the room as everyone waited to see what I was going to say.
I sighed. âI donât suppose I have much say in the matter.â
âMama wouldnât force you into goingââ
âOh yes, yes I would,â Geena interrupted her daughter.
